Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Authors need to register with the journal prior to submitting or, if already registered, can simply log in and begin the five-step process. IAHS Template.

Submission guideline

Please note:

There is no restriction on the number of tables, figures, or references that may accompany a manuscript. Content that is relevant but not essential for the main narrative can be included as supplementary material, which will be published online only. The word counts outlined below are intended as general guidelines and do not include the abstract, references, figure legends, or table captions. ANHS does not impose a strict word limit for Original Research Articles.

  1. Review Article: Up to 8,000 words. Offers a comprehensive, balanced, and critically evaluated overview of the existing literature, fully referenced and written with authority.
  2. Systematic Review: Up to 10,000 words. Synthesizes all empirical evidence meeting predetermined criteria to address a specific research question. Employs rigorous and transparent methods to minimize bias and ensure reliable conclusions. Authors should adhere to PRISMA reporting guidelines.
  3. Original Research Article: ANHS welcomes high-quality original research that is strongly aligned with the journal’s scope.

 Editorial Process

  1. Initial Editorial Assessment: Each manuscript undergoes a preliminary evaluation by the journal’s editorial team. When submitting your paper, please include a cover letter that specifies the article type and outlines the significance of the work. The letter should briefly summarize the study's key findings or the review's main content, explain its relevance to the journal's audience, and include any other relevant details. If your manuscript was previously submitted to another journal and underwent peer review, please include the prior reviewer/editor comments along with a description of how they have been addressed in the current version. This information will be considered during the initial assessment.
  2. External Peer Review: The journal follows a single-blind peer review process in which the identities of reviewers remain anonymous, while author identities are disclosed to the reviewers. Reviewers are required to declare any conflicts of interest that could compromise the impartiality of their assessment. Most submissions will require revisions based on reviewer feedback before acceptance. The final decision regarding publication rests solely with the journal editor.
  3. Copyediting: Accepted manuscripts undergo copyediting to ensure consistency with the journal’s style, improve clarity, and address formatting of tables and figures. Authors will receive edited proofs for final review and approval. Please note that it is the authors’ responsibility to verify the technical accuracy and consistency of the data presented in their article.

Text

Manuscripts may be submitted in either English or Bahasa Indonesia. Once accepted, the manuscript will be published in the language in which it was originally submitted. Please ensure your manuscript follows the formatting guidelines provided in the appropriate template.

Text Formatting

Manuscripts should be submitted in Word.

  • Use a normal, plain font (e.g., 11-point Times Roman) for text.
  • Use italics for emphasis.
  • Use the automatic page numbering function to number the pages.
  • Do not use field functions.
  • Use tab stops or other commands for indents, not the space bar.
  • Use the table function, not spreadsheets, to make tables.
  • Use the equation editor or MathType for equations.
  • Save your file in docx format (Word 2007 or higher) or doc format (older Word versions).

Abbreviations

Abbreviations should be spelled out in full upon first use and used consistently throughout the remainder of the manuscript.

After Acceptance

Once your article is accepted, it will be sent to Production for typesetting. Shortly thereafter, you will receive two emails: the first will ask you to confirm your affiliation, select a publishing model, and handle any rights and publication fee arrangements. The second email, sent after typesetting is complete, will include a link to review and approve the article proofs.

Proof reading

The purpose of the proof is to review the manuscript for any typesetting or formatting errors, as well as to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the text, tables, and figures. Major content changes—such as new results, revised data, changes to the title, or authorship—are not permitted without the Editor’s approval.

Once the article is published online, any further modifications can only be made through an Erratum, which will be linked directly to the original article.

Fees

Accepted manuscripts will be published free of charge until January 2026. However, after January 2026, an article processing charge will apply, along with an additional fee for the inclusion of colour diagrams or pictures.
